Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has penned a letter expressing regret to the Tumbler Ridge community for not informing the RCMP about the Tumbler Ridge shooter’s account. The letter, dated April 23 and signed by Altman, was shared with Tumbler RidgeLines, a local news website, and its authenticity was verified by an OpenAI spokesperson.
In the letter, Altman conveyed his thoughts for the community, particularly the victims and their families, following the tragic events on February 10 in Tumbler Ridge. The shooter, an 18-year-old, took the lives of eight individuals, including six children. Despite prior indications of concerning posts related to gun violence on the shooter’s account, OpenAI failed to report it to authorities in Canada.
After a meeting with B.C. Premier David Eby and Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka in early March, Altman committed to crafting an apology. However, he chose to allow the community time to grieve before issuing the apology.
Acknowledging the company’s misstep, Altman expressed deep remorse for not notifying law enforcement promptly. The failure to escalate the flagged account to authorities was recognized as a critical oversight by Altman.
OpenAI is currently facing a lawsuit from a Tumbler Ridge family who alleges that the company was aware of the shooter’s planning for a mass casualty event but did not act on that information.
B.C. Premier Eby, while sharing the letter on social media, deemed the apology necessary but insufficient given the immense devastation experienced by the Tumbler Ridge families. A statement from the District of Tumbler Ridge emphasized the need for support, respect, and accountability as the community continues its healing process.
Mayor Krakowka, who recently met with provincial officials in Victoria to ensure ongoing support for Tumbler Ridge residents, highlighted the assistance provided by the provincial government, including mental health services for coping with the aftermath of the tragedy.
Investigations into the shooting are progressing, with Eby mentioning that they are in the final stages. The district’s statement stressed the significance of a coroner’s inquest to address lingering questions and provide closure for the community.
