A biographical film about the legendary country-pop singer Shania Twain is in the works at Sony Pictures, co-produced by the artist herself. The movie, titled “Shania,” will be directed by Leah McKendrick, known for her work on the indie comedy-drama “Scrambled” and the upcoming Netflix romantic comedy “Voicemails for Isabelle.” McKendrick will also pen the script for the film.
Details regarding the casting, release date, and specific aspects of Twain’s life to be portrayed in the movie are currently being kept confidential. However, fans who watched the 2022 Netflix documentary “Shania Twain: Not Just a Girl” are aware of the wealth of material available for the biopic.
McKendrick, with her background as a pop singer-songwriter, has been chosen to helm the project. Expressing her excitement on Instagram, she shared her admiration for Twain and her disbelief at the opportunity to bring the singer’s inspiring story to the big screen.
Shania Twain’s remarkable journey from poverty in Timmins, Ont., to becoming a best-selling artist in country music history will be showcased in the film. Known for hits like “Any Man of Mine,” “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” and “You’re Still the One,” Twain has sold over 100 million albums worldwide, making her the top-selling female country-pop artist of all time.
Recognized for her iconic leopard print style, which she solidified in the “That Don’t Impress Me Much” music video, Twain remains a trailblazer in the industry. Her album “Come on Over” is the best-selling studio album by a female solo artist to date.
The biopic announcement coincides with the upcoming release of Twain’s seventh studio album, “Little Miss Twain,” scheduled for July 24. “Shania” joins Sony Pictures’ lineup of music biopics, following the success of “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and the anticipated “The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event.”
Despite attempts to reach out for comments from Twain and Sony Pictures, responses were not immediately received.
