“Star Trek Icon William Shatner and Daughter Beat Cancer Together”

Must read

William Shatner and his daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, faced a challenging journey together after being diagnosed with advanced cancer within months of each other. Shatner, the 95-year-old legendary Canadian actor famous for his role as Capt. James T. Kirk in “Star Trek,” revealed his battle with Stage 4 malignant melanoma that had spread to his lungs and brain in June 2023. Shortly after, Gretsch, 61, discovered a lump in her breast.

During their respective treatments, Gretsch sought solace from her father, who comforted her with words of encouragement, assuring her it was just a temporary setback. Shatner, upon receiving his own diagnosis, remained steadfast, reflecting on the timing that likely saved his life. Both Shatner and Gretsch have since overcome cancer, attributing their recoveries to the exceptional medical care they received.

Gretsch underwent intensive chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and radiation therapy, while Shatner underwent surgery to remove a facial tumor and pursued two years of immunotherapy for his lung and brain cancer. The shared ordeal has deepened their appreciation for life’s simple joys, with Shatner expressing gratitude for everyday wonders like hummingbirds, his dog playing fetch, and his children.

Despite attempts to reach Shatner for comment, CBC News did not receive a response by the time of publication.
