Swan Rescued from Frozen River in Norwalk

Must read

Firefighters successfully rescued a swan trapped on a frozen Connecticut river in Norwalk. Deputy Fire Chief Jonathan Maggio led the operation after receiving reports that the swan had been stuck for several days. Despite initial doubts about the swan’s survival, the rescue team decided to attempt a rescue.

Upon reaching the scene, the rescuers found the swan motionless with its head tucked under its wings. Despite the bleak situation, Maggio and his team were determined to save the swan. Once they approached the swan on the ice, it lifted its head, sparking hope among the rescuers and onlookers.

The rescue operation involved 23 individuals from the fire department and a local wildlife rescue group. Using ropes, ladders, and cold-water suits, they carefully approached the swan, which nervously lifted its wings. The team wrapped the swan in blankets and chipped away at the ice, eventually freeing it from its icy confinement.

After being rescued, the swan named Clancey was transported to a veterinary hospital for treatment. Clancey arrived cold-stunned and dehydrated but responded well to the care provided. The veterinary staff melted the ice from the swan’s feathers and skin, and Clancey is expected to make a full recovery at the Norwalk Veterinary Hospital.

Maggio, who has been involved in rescue operations for three decades, expressed pride in the successful outcome of the swan rescue. He emphasized the emotional impact of the operation, highlighting the joy and satisfaction felt by the entire rescue team upon Clancey’s safe rescue.
