Intensified scrutiny surrounds safety measures at a Swiss bar that caught fire during a New Year’s Eve celebration, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 40 individuals. Prosecutors indicated that the inferno likely originated when sparkling candles were inadvertently brought too close to the ceiling.
Reports from witnesses revealed bar staff carrying fountain candles on champagne bottles, leading to concerns about the foam material used for ceiling soundproofing in the basement where partygoers were dancing. Valais Chief Prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud stated that preliminary evidence suggests the fire ignited due to the proximity of the sparklers to the ceiling, sparking a rapid and extensive blaze.
Authorities are now delving into the bar’s recent renovations, fire suppression systems, evacuation routes, and the number of occupants present during the fire. Despite swift police response, the intensity of the fire made victim identification a challenging task, with only one individual, teenage golfer Emanuele Galeppini from Italy, identified so far.
The bar, known for its youthful clientele, is said to have attracted many young patrons, with the Swiss government indicating that most of the deceased were likely youths. Concerns have been raised about bar safety protocols in Valais and across Switzerland following the tragic incident.
Bar owner Jacques Moretti claimed the establishment had undergone three inspections in a decade, maintaining compliance with regulations. The investigation will further assess whether the bar had undergone annual building inspections, with local security head Stéphane Ganzer stressing the town’s lack of reported defects to the canton.
Residents expressed grief as they paid tributes to the victims, with one resident, Ashley Hauri, recounting narrowly avoiding being at the bar with six former colleagues during the fire. Two colleagues were hospitalized, while four remain unaccounted for, leaving Hauri in shock and desperate for answers.
The aftermath of the devastating fire has prompted a reevaluation of bar safety standards in Valais and Switzerland, signaling potentially significant changes to prevent such tragedies in the future.
