The Toronto International Film Festival kicked off its annual event by unveiling five special presentations for this year’s edition. These additions follow the earlier announcement of the opening-night film and gala presentations. Among the highlights of the 51st iteration are the premieres of the star-studded sci-fi comedy “Alpha Gang,” the Argentinian revenge thriller “Glaxo,” the romance film “Love of Your Life” starring Margaret Qualley, the true-story Nazi hunting drama “The Housewife,” and the action-packed vehicle “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” featuring Mahershala Ali.
“Alpha Gang” is set to have its international premiere at the festival, marking its debut screening outside its home country. Industry experts speculate that the movie, being American, will likely have its world premiere earlier at the Telluride film festival. The four other films are slated for their world premieres at TIFF.
Directed by the Zellner brothers, “Alpha Gang” narrates the tale of aliens disguised as a 1950s biker gang sent to conquer Earth. However, when they encounter the power of human emotions, their invasion plans take an unexpected turn. The film, originally announced in October 2024, underwent several delays and cast changes, with the current lineup boasting Chris Pine, Lily-Rose Depp, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Cate Blanchett, Dave Bautista, Riley Keough, and Léa Seydoux.
Adapted from a novel by Argentinian author Hernán Ronsino, “Glaxo” delves into a small-town drama where the arrival of a policeman and his wife triggers a chain of events revolving around desire and revenge. Director Benjamin Naishtat, known for his social and political themes, is expected to deliver a narrative reflecting Argentina’s historical evolution from the 1950s to the 1980s.
In “Love of Your Life,” Margaret Qualley stars alongside Patrick Schwarzenegger in a poignant story of love and loss. Produced by Ryan Gosling and helmed by director Rachel Morrison, the film explores a widow’s journey to reconnect with a past love, with Gabriel Basso joining the cast.
“The Housewife,” directed by Canadian filmmaker Ben Shirinian, draws inspiration from a true story of a journalist investigating a suspected Nazi officer in 1964 Queens. The narrative takes a complex turn as the journalist befriends the officer’s wife, portrayed by Naomi Watts, alongside Tye Sheridan, Michael Imperioli, and Norman Reedus.
“Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,” featuring Mahershala Ali as a devout hitman, promises a thrilling experience akin to “John Wick.” The film, directed by Bassam Tariq, follows the protagonist’s quest to protect his children and navigate his faith through the streets of Houston. The teaser trailer, released recently, showcases the movie’s intense and colorful visuals, with a cast including Giancarlo Esposito, John Cho, and Tramell Tillman.
TIFF had previously revealed that Siân Heder’s “Being Heumann” would open the festival, while “Prima Facie” and “The Assassin(s)” would debut as gala presentations. The festival is scheduled to run from September 10 to 20, with the full film lineup set for announcement on August 11. Ticket sales will commence for TIFF members on August 21 and for the general public on August 31.
