United States diplomats held a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday with the goal of bringing Israel and Hamas back in line with the Gaza ceasefire agreement. The recent surge of violence over the weekend threatened to disrupt the truce that has been in effect for a week.
Both Israel and Hamas have reaffirmed their commitment to the ceasefire plan advocated by U.S. President Donald Trump following a recent escalation that resulted in 45 fatalities in Gaza within 24 hours.
Despite efforts to uphold the ceasefire, ongoing incidents of violence continue to challenge the sustainability of the truce, raising doubts about the ability of the United States to exert influence on both parties and maintain progress towards resolving the conflict.
The recent developments underscore the obstacles to preserving the hard-won ceasefire and establishing a lasting peace following two years of conflict in Gaza. Critical issues such as Hamas disarmament, Israeli troop withdrawals, and the future governance of the Palestinian region remain unresolved.
President Trump, while applying pressure on both Hamas and Israel to salvage a key foreign policy achievement, emphasized the U.S.’s active role in upholding the ceasefire during a press briefing on Monday.
Both Israel and Hamas have recommitted to the U.S.-backed ceasefire plan following a recent surge of violence that jeopardized the existing truce. Aid deliveries are anticipated to resume after being halted by Israel
President Trump warned that if Hamas leaders fail to comply, decisive action will be taken, but clarified that it would not involve U.S. troops on the ground.
During their current visit, U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, along with Vice President JD Vance scheduled to visit Israel on Tuesday, aim to strengthen the ceasefire and initiate discussions on the subsequent, more challenging phases of the 20-step plan.
Significant U.S. diplomatic engagements in the region, including upcoming talks with Hamas in Egypt, underscore the crucial nature of solidifying the ceasefire for President Trump, who recently heralded “the historic dawn of a new Middle East.”
80 casualties reported in Gaza over the past week, as per ministry
Gaza’s Health Ministry confirmed 80 fatalities and 303 injuries since October 11, a day after the commencement of the ceasefire agreement.
Mahmoud Al Hindi, 18, recounted that residents in Gaza City were caught off guard by Sunday’s airstrikes that targeted a building in their neighborhood without any prior warning.
Al Hindi expressed, “We thought everything was fine, that the ceasefire held, and the fighting had stopped. Suddenly, the strikes hit the home above us.”
