Netflix has officially confirmed the development of a sequel to the highly popular film “KPop Demon Hunters,” which holds the record as the most-watched movie on the streaming platform. The upcoming installment will continue the creative partnership between Netflix and co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, under a new exclusive multi-year deal for animation projects.
Maggie Kang, a Korean filmmaker raised in Toronto, expressed her pride in the audience’s demand for more of the Korean story and characters. The original musical film, produced by Sony Pictures Animation, follows the K-pop girl trio Huntrix as they navigate between their fame as singers and their covert roles as demon hunters. The movie’s standout track “Golden” by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami reached the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The film received critical acclaim and multiple awards, including recognition at the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes. It also secured two Oscar nominations for best animated feature and best original song. Additionally, “Golden” earned a Grammy for best song written for visual media, marking the first Grammy win for a K-Pop song.
In January 2026, Netflix reported record-breaking viewership numbers for the movie, with 482 million views in six months and 32 million views for its lyric videos. The sequel’s co-director, Chris Appelhans, emphasized the importance of a clear creative vision from the outset to ensure a successful follow-up project.
