“One Battle After Another” Dominates Oscars with Six Wins

The film “One Battle After Another” emerged as the top victor at this year’s Academy Awards, securing the coveted Oscar for best picture along with five additional accolades. “Sinners,” directed by Ryan Coogler, had initially led the nominations with a groundbreaking 16 nods, eventually securing wins in four categories.

Michael B. Jordan, starring in “Sinners,” clinched the best actor award, his debut win on his first nomination, receiving a standing ovation from the audience. Jessie Buckley was honored for her portrayal as William Shakespeare’s wife in “Hamnet,” after a successful run during the 2026 award season, including wins at the Golden Globe, Critics Choice, Actor, and BAFTA Film awards.

Amy Madigan was recognized as the best supporting actress for her role in the film “Weapons,” while the best supporting actor award went to Sean Penn for his performance in “One Battle After Another” — marking his third Academy Award.

Canadian talents shone brightly at the ceremony, with Toronto director Maggie Kang receiving the Oscar for best animated feature for “KPop Demon Hunters.” The Canadian production designers of Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau, also triumphed with their own Oscar statuettes. Additionally, Canadians Jordan Samuel and Cliona Furey shared the win for makeup and hairstyling for “Frankenstein.”

In addition to the wins for best picture and best supporting actor, “One Battle After Another” garnered Paul Thomas Anderson his first-ever awards for best adapted screenplay and directing, while also claiming victories in the editing and casting categories — the latter being a newly introduced Academy Award category after 24 years.

“Sinners” scooped up four awards, including Ryan Coogler’s win for best original screenplay and Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s win for best cinematography, marking a historic moment as the first time a racialized woman clinched the award.

“Frankenstein,” filmed in Toronto, also secured three prestigious awards. The 98th Academy Awards ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien, unveiled a stellar lineup of winners, with notable achievements across various categories.
