“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” Reboot Officially Scrapped

Must read

Hulu’s planned revival of the iconic ’90s supernatural series, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” has been officially scrapped, as revealed by Sarah Michelle Gellar, the original show’s lead actress. In an Instagram announcement, Gellar shared that Hulu had chosen to halt the project, effectively putting an end to the new series titled “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale.”

The pilot for the proposed reboot, featuring Gellar and 16-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the next vampire slayer, was already filmed. The original show, known for its depiction of a group battling vampires and other supernatural entities in the fictional town of Sunnydale, California, was groundbreaking in its approach to television storytelling.

Cultural commentators, reflecting on the series’ 20th anniversary in 2017, highlighted how “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” had a profound impact on television production. Its intricate plotlines, rich character development, and exploration of contemporary societal issues set it apart from traditional TV fare.

Expressing gratitude towards Chloe Zhao, the Oscar-winning director enlisted to revive the show, Gellar acknowledged the significance of her character, Buffy, to both herself and fans. Despite the cancellation, Gellar reassured followers that her affection for the character remains unchanged and humorously quipped about being reachable even in the face of an apocalypse.

Hulu has not issued any immediate comments regarding the cancellation.
