“Pro-Democracy Tycoon Jimmy Lai Found Guilty”

Must read

The Niagara family of pro-democracy activist and media tycoon Jimmy Lai eagerly awaited the outcome as a Hong Kong court announced its decision. Lai, a vocal critic of the Chinese government, was found guilty of colluding with foreign forces to endanger national security and publishing seditious material. Despite pleading not guilty, Lai’s conviction was not a surprise to his family, who had been expecting this verdict.

Lai, aged 78 and a British and Hong Kong citizen, was arrested in 2020 under a national security law following the 2019 anti-government protests. He is known for owning Vintage Hotels in Niagara and founding the pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily, which has since closed down. The court used evidence from 161 articles in Apple Daily to support its 855-page decision.

Lai’s family expressed sadness and disappointment at the verdict, feeling that he was unfairly targeted to set an example. His son Sebastien Lai, speaking from the UK, criticized the lack of incriminating evidence in the extensive verdict, highlighting the misuse of the national security law against dissenting voices.

Claire, Lai’s daughter, emphasized her father’s innocence and condemned what she described as a miscarriage of justice. She expressed hope that speaking out might lead to a family reunion. The family is deeply affected by the situation, missing their father and husband.

The court’s decision has drawn condemnation from various governments and officials worldwide. The UK, US, and Canada have called for Lai’s immediate release and criticized the politically motivated nature of his prosecution. The sentencing process for Lai, facing a possible life sentence, is set to commence in early 2026, with a mitigation hearing scheduled for January 12.

The case has sparked international outrage and calls for justice as Lai remains imprisoned in Hong Kong, with concerns raised about his deteriorating health due to the harsh conditions. The family and supporters continue to advocate for his release and fair treatment in the judicial process.
