Mark Arendz, a highly accomplished athlete from Prince Edward Island, is currently in Germany participating in a Para World Cup event. However, Islanders may spot him in local grocery stores as he is featured on Cheerios boxes in a new campaign by General Mills celebrating Canadian athletes heading to the 2026 Paralympic and Olympic Games in Milano-Cortina, Italy.
Arendz, who suffered the loss of his left arm in a childhood farming accident, has an impressive Paralympic career with 12 medals, including two golds in biathlon and cross-country skiing. Expressing his delight, Arendz mentioned to CBC’s Island Morning that it is special to have athletes like him showcased on breakfast and snack tables across the country.
He emphasized the significance of campaigns like this, hoping that children seeing the athletes on cereal boxes will spark conversations about sports and the personal stories behind each athlete’s journey. Arendz believes in sharing his experiences, knowledge, and wisdom with the next generation to inspire success and achievement.
Getting ready for his fifth Paralympic Games in March, the Para-Nordic skier from Hartsville, P.E.I., acknowledged the value of past experiences in enhancing his preparation. While focusing on speed in his upcoming competition, Arendz, at 35, recognizes that he may be nearing the end of his professional athletic career. Nonetheless, he remains committed to self-improvement and constantly seeks ways to enhance his performance both on and off the snow.
The Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympics are scheduled to take place from March 6 to 15, marking the 50th anniversary of the Winter Paralympics. Over 600 athletes will compete in 79 medal events across six sports: alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, ice hockey, snowboard, and wheelchair curling.
