“Man Guilty in 2006 Grad Party Murder”

Must read

A man accused of the murder of Misha Pavelick during a Miller High School graduation party nearly 20 years ago has been found guilty by a jury. The incident took place at the Kinookimaw campground near Regina Beach in 2006, resulting in the fatal stabbing of 19-year-old Pavelick. The accused, who was 17 at the time of the crime, faced charges of second-degree murder in 2023.

Following deliberations that began on Wednesday, a 12-person jury in a Regina King’s Bench courtroom delivered the guilty verdict on Friday. While the jury convicted the individual of second-degree murder, they also had the option to consider the lesser charge of manslaughter. The identity of the now 36-year-old defendant remains protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, and sentencing is set for Nov. 20.

Lorne Pavelick, Misha’s father, expressed relief and gratitude on behalf of the family and friends after the month-long trial’s outcome. Pavelick highlighted the support received from Crown prosecutor Adam Breker, jurors, RCMP, and his son’s friends who were present at the campground on the night of the tragedy.

Describing Misha as a beloved and friendly individual, his mother fondly remembered his infectious smile and the positive impact he had on those around him. Lorne Pavelick emphasized the importance of leaving the sentencing decision to the judge, acknowledging the pain and grief experienced by both families involved.

After the verdict was announced, the accused appeared solemn, with family members visibly emotional nearby. Defense lawyer Andrew Hitchcock stood by his client’s side during the proceedings. Justice Catherine Dawson’s discharge of the jurors saw many emotional faces in the courtroom.

In his defense, Hitchcock raised concerns about the influence of long-standing rumors and witness testimonies on the case. He urged the jurors to consider all possible scenarios surrounding Pavelick’s death. While neither the Crown nor the defense lawyers spoke to the media following the verdict, the Crown signaled its intent to pursue an adult sentence for the convicted individual.
