“Struggling Jets GM vows improvement amid season woes”

Must read

Amid the struggles of his team at the bottom of the NHL standings, Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff expressed shared disappointment with fans but refrained from promising immediate changes to revitalize a challenging season.

“Up to this point, it has been a source of great disappointment. We must discover ways to improve,” Cheveldayoff stated on Monday during a mid-season media briefing.

He then resorted to using three common phrases:

  • “Your focus should be on what you can influence.”
  • “Facing difficulties is inherent in this sport and in life. The key lies in how one manages them.”
  • “Achieving victory in this league is no easy task.”

The struggling Jets are currently on a nine-game losing streak, occupying the last spot in the 32-team National Hockey League with a record of 15-21-4 (wins-losses-overtime losses) totaling 34 points.

At this same time last year, the Jets held a strong 27-12-2 record with 56 points, placing second in the league. They eventually clinched the Presidents’ Trophy after finishing atop the regular season standings with a 56-22-4 record, accumulating 116 points.

Following a promising 8-3 start to the current season, the Jets have plummeted, recording a 7-18-4 streak, which notably included a collapse against the Toronto Maple Leafs last week.

“Our fan base is incredibly passionate, and their sentiment is something we deeply value,” Cheveldayoff acknowledged on Monday.

“Sports are incredibly unpredictable, and that’s the current state of affairs in this game. I share in their [fans’] disillusionment,” he added.

Only one team in NHL history, the 1942-43 New York Rangers, transitioned from being champions one season to finishing last the next. However, considering there were only six teams back then, the Jets’ decline appears even more stunning.

“It’s truly disheartening to witness,” remarked Winnipeg resident Reece Cullen on Monday.

Last year’s success, he noted, “brought a wave of excitement downtown, which everyone rallied around. But from what I’ve observed, the level of enthusiasm seems to have waned.”

Brad Harrison expressed that for him and other devoted Jets supporters, the outlook appears bleak.

“No one anticipated winning the Presidents’ Trophy again this season. However, we did expect to witness further progress in the team’s development,” Harrison remarked.

“Unfortunately, that progress hasn’t materialized, and it’s understandable why people are feeling frustrated.”

‘Achieving success in this league is challenging’

Cheveldayoff indicated that many of their losses have been in close one-goal games, suggesting the team could easily have been on the winning side by sticking to their game plan. He highlighted instances where they deviated from their established strategy.

He also defended head coach Scott Arniel and his coaching staff, emphasizing
