Abel Mwansa’s infectious smile always caught people’s attention, according to his father. Tragically, the 12-year-old was one of the victims in the devastating mass shooting that occurred in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., on February 10, which stands as one of the most horrific incidents of its kind in Canadian history, claiming the lives of eight individuals, including six children.
His father fondly remembers Abel as an ambitious and kind-hearted soul, always full of curiosity. The Mwansa family had moved to Canada from Zambia in March 2023, where Abel was born in May 2013. Abel’s father was overjoyed at his son’s birth, deciding to give him his own name as a symbol of pride and love.
Abel’s father reflects on his son’s exceptional qualities, describing him as a special child who had a talent for turning adversaries into friends. Abel’s passion for soccer was evident from a young age, and upon settling in Tumbler Ridge, he swiftly joined a local team, earning accolades for his skill and dedication on the field.
Aside from soccer, Abel enjoyed activities like skating and rollerblading, often assisting other kids in learning these skills. However, his true fascination lay in the realm of science. He spent hours engrossed in scientific videos and conducting experiments at home, leaving behind a trail of mysterious liquid-filled bottles in the family refrigerator.
The grieving father recalls Abel’s potential as a brilliant mind, envisioning a future where his son would have excelled in various fields, possibly even becoming a renowned scientist. The Zambian government expressed deep sorrow over the loss of this promising young life.
Abel’s father had contemplated homeschooling him in the past to spend more time together, but Abel’s strong desire to attend school with his friends and teachers led to a different decision. In the aftermath of the tragic shooting, stories have emerged of Abel’s heroic actions, with witnesses recounting how he selflessly tried to protect others during the chaos, earning him the title of a hero in the eyes of many.
Despite the profound sadness that envelops the family, Abel’s father finds solace in the positive impact his son had on others, recalling the joy Abel brought to people’s lives with his infectious smile. Abel is survived by his parents, his younger sister, and an eight-month-old brother.
