Liberal Member of Parliament Steven Guilbeault has resigned from his cabinet position following the federal government’s agreement with Alberta to move forward with a new bitumen pipeline to the British Columbia coast. Guilbeault, who had been serving as the official languages minister and the minister of Canadian identity and culture, stated that his decision to enter politics was driven by his commitment to addressing climate change and environmental protection.
The agreement, signed by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Prime Minister Mark Carney, outlines the construction of a pipeline to transport a million barrels of oil daily from Alberta’s oil fields to a Pacific coast export terminal, primarily destined for Asian markets. Guilbeault expressed his opposition to the memorandum of understanding, citing environmental concerns and the need to prioritize environmental issues.
While Guilbeault will continue as a Liberal MP, he emphasized the importance of environmental measures in combating climate change. The agreement includes provisions to increase the industrial carbon price in Alberta and commitments from both sides to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, despite potential implications for conventional energy production.
Prime Minister Carney described the deal as a model of cooperative federalism, emphasizing partnership and trust. Guilbeault highlighted the dismantling of climate action measures he had worked on as environment minister, expressing his unwavering dedication to environmental causes.
The resignation of Guilbeault, a vocal advocate for sustainability, prompted mixed reactions, with Alberta Justice Minister Mickey Amery celebrating the news while Federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson praised Guilbeault’s contributions to Canada. Guilbeault’s history of environmental activism, including involvement in high-profile stunts, has shaped his advocacy for environmental causes. Green Party Leader Elizabeth May urged Guilbeault to consider joining her party, emphasizing the need for greater climate action support within the political landscape.
