Canadian Para skier Alexis Guimond claimed the top spot in the men’s standing super-G event at a recent World Cup competition held in Saalbach, Austria. Hailing from Gatineau, Que., Guimond clocked in at one minute and three seconds, securing the gold medal. Following closely behind were Arthur Bauchet from France with a time of 1:03.06, earning silver, and Russia’s Aleksei Bugaev clinching bronze with a time of 1:03.81.
This victory marked Guimond’s third consecutive win in the super-G discipline this season, adding to his impressive streak of seven podium finishes out of 10 World Cup races. Reflecting on his performance, Guimond expressed satisfaction with the challenging course layout, noting his ability to navigate difficult sections while maintaining speed. He credited his back-to-back wins for boosting his confidence and highlighted the team’s positive momentum.
In the men’s sitting category, fellow Canadian Kurt Oatway secured a bronze medal, crossing the finish line in 1:04.75. Jeroen Kampschreur of the Netherlands claimed the gold with a time of 1:03.24, while Takeshi Suzuki of an impressive performance in his first race of the season despite previous injury setbacks.
Meanwhile, Mollie Jepsen from West Vancouver, B.C., achieved a podium finish by earning bronze in the women’s standing super-G event with a time of 1:09.26. Jepsen emphasized her consistency and determination to further improve her performance. The gold medal in the women’s event went to Varvara Voronchikhina, with France’s Aurelie Richard securing silver. Michaela Gosselin from Collingwood, Ont., placed fifth with a time of 1:13.08.
The Canadian Para Alpine skiing team demonstrated strong performances across various events, showcasing their dedication and preparation for upcoming competitions, including the Paralympic Games in Cortina.
