Canada Requires Testing of Iranian Pistachios Amid Salmonella Outbreak

Must read

Health officials in Canada have instructed that Iranian pistachios brought into the country must undergo testing for salmonella before being put up for sale. This directive is part of an investigation into a salmonella outbreak involving 155 confirmed cases nationwide, with the actual number likely higher as not all affected individuals seek medical attention for testing. Of the reported cases, 24 individuals required hospitalization, but fortunately, there have been no fatalities. The illnesses occurred between March and November.

Consumers are advised by federal authorities to consider avoiding pistachios and products containing Iranian pistachios due to potential contamination with various strains of salmonella. The Public Health Agency of Canada stated that many affected individuals mentioned consuming pistachios and related products like Dubai-style chocolate and pastry items. Several brands of pistachios and pistachio-containing products, such as Dubai pistachio and knafeh milk chocolate, are currently under recall, with the possibility of additional products being identified as the investigation progresses.

Salmonella infection, a foodborne illness, can lead to symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, cramps, and diarrhea. The presence of salmonella in nuts like pistachios can be attributed to contamination during the growing, harvesting, and processing stages, with factors like manure runoff and bird or insect contact playing a role. Health officials urge individuals, retailers, and food establishments to check the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s recall listings for affected products and refrain from consuming or using them, as heat may not eliminate salmonella in pistachios.

The pistachios linked to the outbreak were imported from Iran, prompting Canada to temporarily halt imports of Iranian pistachios and pistachio-containing products as a precautionary measure. The CFIA has made it compulsory for importers and manufacturers with Iranian pistachios imported before September 27 to test them for salmonella before sale in Canada. This measure aims to ensure consumer safety and instill confidence in the products’ quality. Similar recalls, such as the romaine lettuce incident, have occurred previously, emphasizing the importance of rigorous testing and decontamination practices in food safety protocols.
