Nearly 300 passengers were left stranded for up to 13 hours after a Via Rail train experienced mechanical issues near Brockville, Ont., on Wednesday night. The incident affected three trains, including one from Montreal to Toronto and two bound for Ottawa. Passengers faced delays and discomfort but were eventually transferred to alternative trains.
Via Rail spokesperson Karl Helou mentioned that the company explored options for alternative transportation, but due to unavailability, passengers were provided with necessary amenities onboard. Despite the inconvenience, passengers like Kiyavash Parvar and Abraham Barron made the best of the situation, with Barron even opting to leave the train and arrange for pickup.
The delays caused frustration among passengers, with some like Morgan Davis expressing dissatisfaction over the lack of clear communication during the ordeal. Isabelle Leduc highlighted issues like non-functional toilets during the journey. Eventually, all affected passengers safely reached their destinations by noon on Thursday.
In response to the incident, Via Rail offered full refunds and travel credits to affected passengers. Federal Transport Minister Steve MacKinnon emphasized the need for continuous improvement in handling such situations, acknowledging the challenges posed by winter weather conditions.
