When Irv Radatzke celebrated his 100th birthday recently, a close friend sought to express gratitude for his community contributions. The World War II veteran marked the occasion and Remembrance Day at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster following a fall. In a bid to lift his spirits, Moe Boyle initiated Operation Irv, urging individuals to send Christmas cards to the centenarian.

The objective was for Radatzke to receive 100 Christmas cards during the holiday season. Surpassing expectations, he has been inundated with over 700 cards, many of which showcase dog images and drawings, reflecting his fondness for canines.

Additionally, the veteran has received heartfelt cards from schoolchildren, including a touching message from a Grade 5 student expressing gratitude for his service during the war. The student wished him a joyous Christmas and abundant presents during his hospital stay.

Messages of support have even arrived from as far as the North Pole. Boyle mentioned that after sending a card to Santa Claus, Radatzke received a response informing him that he had made it onto Santa’s nice list.

Boyle emphasized that the cards and well-wishes have brought joy to Radatzke during his hospitalization and are anticipated to ease his transition to a care facility. She shared that he appreciates each card, often remarking on their kindness, especially enjoying those from young children.

Radatzke and Boyle’s friendship, spanning over two decades, began when they met while she was working as a crossing guard and he was walking his dogs nearby. Boyle recounted how Radatzke proved his age to her with his driver’s license, leading to a lasting friendship based on mutual respect and kindness.

Recognized for his remarkable milestone, the City of New Westminster declared November 13 as “Irv Radatzke Day,” with birthday greetings from King Charles, Gov. Gen. Mary Simon, and B.C. Premier David Eby. The ongoing Christmas card initiative serves as a community tribute to Radatzke, with Boyle emphasizing the outpouring of support and goodwill from individuals both familiar and new to him.
