The Canadian Prime Minister is expected to announce the next Governor General of Canada on Tuesday, as per sources from CBC News. It is anticipated that the chosen candidate, Mark Carney, will be fully fluent in both English and French. Moreover, sources have disclosed that the appointee will be a female candidate.
Following the prime minister’s recommendation, the formal announcement of the new Governor General is made after receiving official approval from the King. This forthcoming selection marks a significant decision for Carney since assuming office last year.
The current Governor General, Mary Simon, is concluding her five-year term in the vice-regal role at Rideau Hall. Notably, Simon, who is the first Indigenous Governor General in Canada’s history, has been dedicated to promoting reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, advocating for mental health destigmatization, diversity, and environmental awareness during her tenure.
Simon, who is Inuk, has faced criticism for her limited proficiency in French despite efforts to enhance her language skills through French lessons. Responding to inquiries from the Bloc Québécois, Simon’s office disclosed that over $52,000 was allocated for 324 hours of French classes as of last year. Additionally, the appointment of Simon in the previous year led to over 1,300 official complaints received by the commissioner of official languages by the end of 2021.
In a recent interview with Radio-Canada, Carney affirmed that the upcoming Governor General would be proficiently bilingual in both English and French.
Varying Term Lengths
Although Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson defended Simon’s linguistic abilities, he emphasized the importance of the Governor General being fluent in French as well. Wilkinson acknowledged controversies surrounding French proficiency, particularly emphasizing the significance of francophones feeling represented in the country.
Traditionally, Governors General serve a term of five years, although the duration can be extended or shortened. Notably, David Johnston served for seven years, while Julie Payette resigned during her third year due to findings of fostering a toxic work environment at Rideau Hall. Following criticism for not utilizing the advisory committee during Payette’s appointment, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reinstated the committee to recommend Simon’s appointment.
Despite the information available, the Prime Minister’s Office has yet to respond to CBC News regarding whether Carney engaged the advisory committee in making his recommendation.
