Prime Minister to Announce Canada’s Next Governor General
The upcoming selection of Canada’s next governor general is anticipated to be unveiled by the Prime Minister on Tuesday, as per sources from CBC News. The chosen candidate, widely speculated to be Mark Carney, is expected to be proficient in both English and French, with sources suggesting that the appointee is female.
Once the Prime Minister’s recommendation is officially approved by the King, the formal announcement of the new governor general will follow. This appointment marks a significant decision for Carney since assuming office last year. The current governor general, Mary Simon, is nearing the end of her five-year term at Rideau Hall, where she made history as the first Indigenous person to hold the position.
Simon, of Inuk heritage, has focused her tenure on fostering reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, advocating for mental health destigmatization, diversity, and environmental conservation. Despite facing criticism for her limited French proficiency, Simon has made efforts to learn the language, with the government funding French lessons for her.
In contrast to Simon’s term, Commissioner Raymond Théberge ruled in 2022 that the nomination process for Simon did not breach federal bilingualism legislation. Carney has expressed his commitment to ensuring the next governor general is fluently bilingual in both English and French.
While Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson defended Simon’s linguistic challenges, he emphasized the importance of French proficiency for the King’s representative in Canada. The appointment of governors general typically spans five years, although terms can either be extended or curtailed. Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reintroduced an advisory committee on vice-regal appointments to recommend Simon’s appointment, following criticism over the lack of committee involvement in Julie Payette’s appointment.
The Prime Minister’s Office has yet to confirm whether Carney utilized the advisory committee for his recommendation, as reported by CBC News.
