In a court hearing in Los Angeles County, prosecutors presented a body-camera video featuring singer D4vd, also known as David Burke, discussing his interaction with then-13-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. Burke claimed he was unaware of her age, stating she had told him she was 18. The prosecution alleges that despite her being a minor, Burke engaged in a sexual relationship with her and later killed her when she threatened to expose the affair.
During the hearing, images of Rivas Hernandez’s dismembered body were displayed, which had been discovered in Burke’s Tesla. Detective Joshua Byers testified that he found her remains in separate bags in the car trunk. Missing fingers were noted on one hand. Burke, now 21, faces charges of murder, continuous sexual abuse of a minor, and unlawful mutilation of human remains. He has pleaded not guilty, denying any involvement in the girl’s death.
Rivas Hernandez’s parents attended the court session, along with numerous spectators who secured seats through a lottery system. Deputy Juan Gonzalez, who interacted with Burke during the missing person investigation, mentioned the singer’s cooperation and provided access to the residence where no signs of the girl were found.
Burke disclosed meeting Rivas Hernandez online and in person, sharing her contact information and photos with the deputies. The ongoing preliminary hearing, estimated to span four days, will determine whether the prosecution has ample evidence to proceed to trial. Judge Charlaine Olmedo will make the decision without a jury present.
Prosecutors allege that Burke began abusing Rivas Hernandez when she was 13 and murdered her to protect his music career after she threatened to report him. The prosecution claims to possess text messages and images exchanged between them, supporting their case. Burke allegedly dismembered the victim’s body using tools ordered online, with DNA evidence linking her to his garage.
Despite delays in his arrest, attributed to various factors including uncooperative witnesses and pending autopsy reports, Burke remains in custody. The defence has not publicly countered the prosecution’s narrative. Preliminary hearings like this one aim to assess the strength of the case before a full trial.
D4vd, a rising music artist, gained fame through social media platforms and live performances, including a Coachella appearance shortly before Rivas Hernandez’s death. His music career has been marred by the criminal allegations, contrasting with his previous success in the industry.
