“Artist Honors Saskatchewan Roughriders with New Grey Cup Tribute”

Must read

A Saskatchewan artist has commemorated the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ Grey Cup triumph with a fresh tribute emblem. The Riders clinched a thrilling 25-17 victory over the Montreal Alouettes on Sunday night, securing their first Grey Cup championship since 2013.

In celebration of this milestone, Chris Chipak, an artist and illustrator hailing from Red Pheasant Cree Nation, located south of North Battleford, crafted a design inspired by an earlier Indigenous logo he had crafted for the team, which has emerged as one of the most beloved designs among fans.

The new artwork showcases the Grey Cup, accompanied by silhouettes of the team’s other four trophies in the background. At the center of the trophy, a single feather rises, illuminated by the radiant sun in the backdrop. Below, a buffalo is depicted at the base, with its mane transforming into roots that extend across the ground.

Chipak shared that he drew inspiration for the design while observing the championship game and noticing fans donning his previous work. He expressed his delight in witnessing fans embrace his creations, noting the special connection he feels when watching the games.

Notably, last season, Chipak introduced the Indigenous Riders logo, featuring elements such as the buffalo, river, sun, and the iconic “S” nestled between two feathers, as part of the team’s Truth and Reconciliation initiative. The logo, released in full color earlier this year, has garnered significant popularity among supporters.

Reflecting on the warm reception from Indigenous families, Chipak emphasized the logo’s deep meaning for them, emphasizing the pride and sense of ownership they feel towards it.

The recent design, according to Chipak, aims to pay tribute to the team’s momentous victory, as well as the strong bond forged between the Riders and their fans statewide. Additionally, leading up to the Grey Cup game, Chipak also crafted a digital illustration of A.J. Ouellette, the Riders’ running back, adding to the excitement surrounding the championship event.

Chipak hopes that this new design will serve as a lasting reminder of the historic win and the unifying power of sports in bringing communities together in Saskatchewan.
