Challenging ice conditions posed a significant challenge for Rachel Homan during the Montana’s Canadian Curling Trials on Friday. The Ottawa-based top-ranked team narrowly secured a tense 5-4 victory over Christina Black’s Halifax rink in the first match of the best-of-three women’s final at Scotiabank Centre.
Facing a two-point deficit in the 10th end, Black had an opportunity for a multi-point score but settled for a single point. Despite having five rocks in the four-foot ring, she attempted to displace multiple stones but failed to dislodge a Homan rock from the button’s side.
The men’s final saw the Calgary rink led by Brad Jacobs triumph over Matt Dunstone’s Winnipeg team with a 9-8 score. Dunstone initially trailed but mounted a comeback with a four-point end in the fifth and a two-point draw in the ninth end, taking an 8-7 lead. However, a missed double-takeout attempt in the 10th end allowed Jacobs to secure a two-point victory.
The women’s teams grappled with challenging ice conditions due to frosty and inconsistent surfaces, despite mild drizzly weather outside the venue. Homan’s squad managed to stay resilient and precise amidst the fluctuating ice conditions, securing crucial steals to maintain their lead over Black’s team.
Game 2 for both the men’s and women’s finals is scheduled for Saturday, with a potential Game 3 on Sunday if required. The winning teams from these trials will represent Canada at the upcoming Milan-Cortina Winter Games in February.
