Canada’s foreign aid representative revealed a $7 million humanitarian assistance package for Caribbean nations affected by Hurricane Melissa. In this allocation, $5 million will support life-saving initiatives conducted by emergency response organizations and healthcare providers. The remaining $2 million will aid the United Nations World Food Program in delivering essential supplies to Jamaica.
The official highlighted that Canada stands ready to dispatch emergency relief items from its stockpile through the Red Cross upon request from the affected countries. While focusing on immediate requirements, Ottawa also pledged to assist the Caribbean region in its recovery phase following the devastating impact of the Category 5 hurricane, which resulted in numerous fatalities in Jamaica, Cuba, and Haiti.
Previously, Canada had funded programs aimed at enhancing disaster preparedness and logistics in countries like Jamaica. Additionally, efforts are underway to revamp global institutions to enable Caribbean nations to invest in climate-resilient infrastructure.
The announcement underscores Canada’s commitment to supporting hurricane-affected nations and reinforces its solidarity with the Caribbean region during this challenging period.
