Leylah Fernandez’s winning streak in Japan continues as she emerged victorious at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. The 23-year-old Canadian tennis player secured a hard-fought victory against Maria Sakkari from Greece in the opening round of the tournament. Fernandez displayed her skill and determination during the match, defeating the 30-year-old qualifier in a thrilling contest that lasted over two hours, with a final score of 7-6 (5), 6-4.

During the match, Fernandez showcased her prowess with two aces, one double fault, 47 unforced errors, and 32 winners. She maintained a solid performance by winning 58% of her first serve points and 50% of her second serve points. Additionally, she successfully saved six out of 11 break points and capitalized on six out of 10 break points.

In a separate match, Victoria Mboko from Toronto triumphed over Bianca Andreescu from Mississauga in a closely contested all-Ontario battle. Mboko secured a convincing victory with a score of 6-3, 6-3, after a 73-minute match. Notable statistics from the match include Andreescu’s 19 unforced errors and Mboko’s 18 unforced errors. Mboko also recorded three double faults, one ace, and 21 winners, showcasing a strong performance. The Toronto teenager excelled by winning 77% of her first serve points and 50% of her second serve points, ultimately winning three out of eight return games.

Meanwhile, Denis Shapovalov advanced to the second round of the Swiss Indoors tennis tournament after defeating Marcos Giron from the United States with a final score of 6-7 (3), 6-0, 7-6 (4). Despite facing five double faults, Shapovalov displayed his skill with 13 aces and converted five out of his eight break-point opportunities. Giron, on the other hand, struggled to break Shapovalov’s serve, managing to break him only twice out of seven chances.

Shapovalov, who recently reached the semifinals at the Stockholm Open, improved his head-to-head record against Giron to 2-3. The ninth seed in Basel is set to face lucky loser Valentin Royer from France in the next round, whom he defeated earlier this year in the U.S. Open second round. Additionally, the upcoming action at the ATP 500 tournament will feature a highly anticipated all-Montreal clash between fifth-seed Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriel Diallo.
