The Canadian military has commenced the deployment of anti-drone systems discreetly at key ports and air bases to address the challenges posed by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as reported by CBC News. The primary objective is to prevent incidents similar to recent conflicts in northern Europe and to mitigate surprise attacks observed in the Russia-Ukraine war. Due to the rapid evolution of drone technology and tactics, the implementation process has been ongoing but remains a work in progress.
Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee, commander of the Royal Canadian Navy, highlighted the complexities and regulatory hurdles, particularly in urban areas, regarding the protection of warships in port. He disclosed that existing systems are operational to neutralize aerial threats and mentioned ongoing collaborative efforts within the Department of National Defence (DND), in partnership with Transport Canada and the RCMP.
Recent reports indicated Ukraine’s successful use of kamikaze drones and long-range missiles to sink a Russian ballistic missile carrier in 2024. Moreover, Ukrainian drones allegedly coordinated attacks resulting in the sinking of a Russian submarine the same year. Ukraine has also conducted numerous drone assaults on Russian military airfields since the onset of Russia’s invasion in 2022, with a notable operation in 2025 damaging strategic bombers.
Western nations, including Canada, have been closely monitoring these developments and instituting their own defense strategies. Lt.-Gen. Jamie Speiser-Blanchet, commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force, confirmed the implementation of counter-UAV systems at airbases nationwide to safeguard against potential threats, emphasizing the protection of forthcoming aircraft acquisitions.
The Canadian military adopted the Falcon Shield system to protect troops in Latvia from surveillance and kamikaze drones. The initial phase of the multi-million-dollar project was deployed in 2024, with an ongoing second phase focusing on securing critical installations and airfields. Falcon Shield utilizes radar, high-performance cameras, and jamming technology for drone interception.
In addition to Falcon Shield, Canada trialed a long-range laser system in 2024 as a non-kinetic method to neutralize drones. The DND is exploring specialized urban drone defense systems through its IDEaS program. Vice-Admiral Topshee emphasized the importance of regulatory considerations, especially regarding electronic jamming in urban environments and the necessity of safety protocols for drone interception over populated areas.
Legislative amendments, including updates to the Aeronautics Act, have enhanced the government’s capacity to address security risks posed by unauthorized drones.
