“Climate Change Threatens Tree Swallows at Long Point Bird Observatory”

Long Point Bird Observatory, situated on a 40-kilometre sandspit near Lake Erie in southwestern Ontario and recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, serves as a vital habitat for various wildlife species. Being the oldest continuously operating bird sanctuary in North America, the observatory faces challenges due to climate change affecting its inhabitants.

Recent research, featured in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on June 24, reveals alarming trends observed in tree swallows at Long Point since 1969. The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Michigan and Birds Canada using historical data from the observatory, indicates a decline in egg production and body size among the tree swallows. A significant decrease in aerial insectivores, like tree swallows, by 43 percent and a more than 60 percent drop in insect numbers since 1977 have also been noted.

Lead author Charlotte Probst, a PhD student at the University of Michigan, emphasized the importance of tree swallows as a model organism for studying ecological changes. The research highlights a timing mismatch caused by climate change, leading to earlier emergence of insects compared to when the birds breed, resulting in a decreased availability of food during critical breeding periods for the swallows.

Matthew Fuirst, a research ecologist at Birds Canada and co-author of the study, emphasized the adverse effects of lower insect abundance on the physical condition of the swallows, leading to smaller body sizes and reduced egg laying. The study projects an increasing mismatch in timing by more than three days per decade since 1977.

Additional findings by PhD candidate Hadil Elsayed from York University, focusing on insect biomass at Long Point, indicate a shift in insect emergence due to rising temperatures. The decline in insect populations, attributed to changes in vegetation landscape and climate change, poses a significant threat to the ecosystem.

To address the decline in insects and support the tree swallow population, experts recommend local actions such as planting native wildflowers, reducing pesticide and herbicide use, and preserving natural habitats. These efforts are crucial in maintaining a balanced ecosystem and safeguarding the interconnected food chain.

The study underscores the urgency of addressing climate change impacts at both local and global levels to ensure the preservation of critical habitats and species diversity.
