A coal-laden train derailed near Lytton, B.C., on Saturday morning, with six cars veering off the tracks, as confirmed by the Canadian National Railway. The incident occurred along a railway section adjacent to the Thompson River between Lytton and Big Horn. Crews are actively managing the situation on-site, stated Ashley Michnowski, CN’s senior media relations manager, in an email on Saturday. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, fires, leaks, spills, or hazardous materials involved.
Michnowski reassured that there is no threat to public safety and mentioned that an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the derailment. Tricia Thorpe, the electoral director of the area, expressed relief that the situation wasn’t more severe, noting that most of the derailed cars remained upright, attributing the incident to a large rock falling from the mountainside. The derailment is visible from Highway 1.
