Conservative MPs Push for Stronger Canada-U.S. Trade Relations

Must read

Conservative lawmaker Jamil Jivani, along with a few Tory colleagues, revisited Washington for discussions with Canadian business figures and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Canadian Ambassador Mark Wiseman was also present at the gathering, organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Canada. Greer has expressed concerns about Canada’s stance in the ongoing trade talks.

Jivani, who has close ties with Vice-President JD Vance and connections in the Trump administration, had previously met with Vance and Greer during a separate diplomatic trip to Washington in February. He also had a brief conversation with President Donald Trump at the White House during that visit.

Jivani aimed to support Prime Minister Mark Carney’s trade negotiations with the Trump administration during his earlier visit to Washington. He emphasized the non-partisan nature of the trade discussions in a social media video statement.

When asked about Jivani’s recent trip and objectives, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre stated he lacked information to share at that moment but highlighted the party’s consistent efforts in Washington to advocate for tariff-free trade.

A delegation of Tory MPs, including Conservative finance critic Shuvaloy Majumdar, foreign affairs critic Michael Chong, and MPs Jacob Mantle and Corey Tochor, was also in Washington to convey the Conservative party’s pro-Canada message. Poilievre’s office spokesperson, Sam Lilly, anticipated positive and constructive conversations during the visit.

Conservative critic for Canada-U.S. trade Shelby Kramp-Neuman, who was in Ottawa, mentioned her upcoming trip to Washington to engage in direct discussions to safeguard and enhance tariff-free trade between the two nations.

In response to Jivani’s previous comments on the trade war, Poilievre, who did not visit the U.S. capital on his recent trip, distanced himself from Jivani’s views, emphasizing that they were personal opinions. The meeting followed Greer’s warning to a congressional committee about potential trade enforcement actions against Canada regarding U.S. alcohol sales in Canadian liquor stores.
