“Deadly Russian Drone Attack Hits Ukraine Residential Area”

Must read

At least 26 individuals perished and several others were reported missing following a Russian drone and missile assault that struck residential complexes in the western Ukrainian town of Ternopil, as stated by Ukraine’s interior minister on Wednesday.

Ihor Klymenko disclosed that 26 people were unaccounted for after the attacks, including three children, with nearly 100 individuals sustaining injuries. The assault by Russia involved 476 drones and 48 missiles, targeting energy and transportation infrastructure, leading to emergency power shutdowns in several regions amidst freezing temperatures.

The upper levels of a residential building in Ternopil were severely damaged in the strike, with black smoke billowing and an orange glow emanating from a fire in the tower block. Klymenko relayed on Telegram that emergency teams worked tirelessly through the night, meticulously searching the debris of the shattered apartment complex.

“A significant amount of work remains. The primary focus is locating any individuals possibly trapped beneath the rubble,” Klymenko emphasized, detailing the extensive devastation within the building. The tragic incident claimed the lives of three children.

Oksana Kobel anxiously awaited news of her son’s fate, who was inside a ninth-floor apartment during the attack. She recounted, “I went to work, heard the explosions. I called him and said: ‘Bohdan, go to the shelter, get dressed.’ He answered: ‘Mom, I am already up, everything will be fine.'”

Amidst the escalating tensions, Poland, a NATO member state neighboring western Ukraine, temporarily shut down Rzeszow and Lublin airports in the southeast and deployed Polish and allied aircraft as a precaution to safeguard its airspace.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed reports of high-rise residential buildings being struck in Ternopil, expressing concerns about potential individuals trapped beneath the rubble. He urged allies to intensify pressure on Russia to cease its ongoing conflict in Ukraine and provide additional air defense missiles to Kyiv.

The situation worsened as energy infrastructure was targeted in seven Ukrainian regions, leading to power usage restrictions nationwide. Witnesses in Lviv reported hearing explosions, and residents in Kyiv sought refuge in metro stations. The ramifications of the attacks were severe, prompting an urgent need for humanitarian aid and support.

Russia, refuting allegations of targeting civilians deliberately, cited retaliatory airstrikes in response to what it deemed “terrorist attacks” on Russian territories. The conflict escalated further as Ukraine’s military confirmed launching attacks on military sites in Russia using U.S.-made ATACMS missiles.

Zelenskyy’s diplomatic efforts continued as he engaged in talks in Turkey and scheduled a meeting with U.S. army officials in Kyiv to reinvigorate peace negotiations with Russia. Despite previous rounds of talks brokered by Turkey, direct dialogue between Kyiv and Moscow remained elusive, with Russian forces advancing after the invasion commenced in February 2022.

The international community closely monitored the developments, striving to provide assistance to war-torn Ukraine and prevent further aggression by Russia. As uncertainties loomed over funding for Ukraine’s reconstruction and postwar security guarantees, discussions also revolved around potential American commitments to future security arrangements, with a clear stance against deploying U.S. troops on Ukrainian soil.
