A public servant employed at Global Affairs Canada has been cleared of all 11 charges against him by the Ontario Court of Justice. Galal Eldien Ali has been acquitted of multiple sexual assault charges involving a former Afghan interpreter he collaborated with at Camp Nathan Smith military base in Afghanistan from 2011 to 2013, and who later resided at his residence in Canada. The allegations were made by the woman, but Ali consistently refuted them. Justice Dave Berg dismissed all charges due to credibility issues without providing written reasons. The woman’s identity is protected by a publication ban. Ali, who served as a technical adviser at the Canadian International Development Agency in Kandahar, faced a civil suit seeking $1.75 million in damages from the accuser. The impact of this acquittal on the civil case and the possibility of an appeal remain uncertain.
