“KW Titans Celebrate Black History Month With Caribana Ignite”

Must read

The K-W Titans basketball team is set to launch Black History Month festivities during their upcoming game against the Lake Erie Jackals on Sunday. Collaborating with Kitchener festival Caribana Ignite for the third consecutive year, the Titans aim to honor Black history and cultural heritage within the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.

Kate Schooley, the team’s chief communications officer, emphasized the significance of spotlighting the experiences of players, coaches, and staff members. She expressed that the event serves as a platform to acknowledge the diverse backgrounds of individuals within the team and showcase their value to both the team and the broader community.

The pre-game activities, commencing at 2:00 p.m., an hour before the match, are tailored to engage the community, according to Geraldine Stafford, the festival director of Caribana Ignite. Stafford highlighted the excitement of community members and young attendees in witnessing the game and interacting with players and community leaders.

The event programming is designed to promote representation, offering various elements for young spectators to connect with, including a halftime show, a free throw contest, the inclusion of the Black National Anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” and educational content on Black History Month displayed on the arena screens.

Stafford emphasized the diversity within the Waterloo region’s Black community, noting the varying backgrounds and identities present, including individuals from the Caribbean and those of African descent. She underscored the importance of allies in fostering inclusive conversations and support.

Schooley highlighted the inclusive nature of the Titans’ games, stating that one does not need to be a basketball enthusiast to enjoy the experience. She described the games as a combination of sports and entertainment, offering a lively atmosphere that caters to all attendees.

The collaboration between Caribana Ignite Kitchener and KW Titans originated three years ago, evolving from an initiative to bridge connections between the Waterloo Regional Police Service, the Titans, and the community. Stafford’s involvement as the manager of equity, diversity, and inclusion at the police service paved the way for the inaugural Black History Month celebration during a Titans game in 2024.

As Caribana Ignite expands its events in Kitchener and Toronto this year, Stafford emphasized the significance of February, not only as Black History Month but also as the Carnival season in various regions. The convergence of cultural celebrations during this period adds depth and richness to the community engagement initiatives undertaken by the Titans and Caribana Ignite.
