Global Leaders Assert Sovereignty Amid U.S. Pressure

Must read

Leaders from Greenland, Mexico, and Colombia are emphasizing their countries’ sovereignty and resisting pressure from the United States following the ousting of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela. This unexpected move has startled global leaders, particularly those who have also faced U.S. intervention threats.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum firmly denounced interference in other nations’ internal affairs, emphasizing Mexico’s sovereignty and rejecting any form of intervention. She highlighted that while Mexico collaborates with the U.S. on issues like drug trafficking and security, any hint of military action in Mexico, as suggested by President Trump to combat drug cartels, goes against their principles of self-governance.

Observers note Mexico’s increased compliance with U.S. requests, especially in areas like cartel crackdowns and deportations. Any military intervention in Mexico would jeopardize this cooperation, according to political analyst Carlos Pérez Ricart.

In contrast, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern over the disregard for international law by the U.S., warning of potential ramifications on future international relations.

In Colombia, President Gustavo Petro vehemently opposed possible U.S. strikes against drug traffickers in his country, highlighting their efforts in combating drug activities and cautioning against any military actions that could harm civilians.

Meanwhile, Greenland’s Prime Minister reassured citizens that the country is not under imminent threat of a U.S. takeover, emphasizing Greenland’s democratic status and the ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with the U.S. amid growing interest in its strategic importance. Greenland’s strategic location and mineral resources align with U.S. interests, but Denmark and other European nations stand firm in supporting Greenland’s autonomy.

The European Union reiterated its commitment to respecting national sovereignty, with European leaders affirming the need for Greenland and Denmark to decide their future independently.
