After being discovered coated in industrial-strength glue near an industrial area, Elmer, a frightened kitten, faced a precarious situation at the Humane Society of North Texas. Misty Mendes, the director of shelter medicine, recounted the harrowing experience of removing the adhesive from the four-month-old feline to save his life.
The rescue team embarked on a challenging mission to eliminate the glue before it solidified, potentially obstructing Elmer’s breathing passages. With relentless effort and care, they managed to free the kitten from the sticky predicament. Renamed after the glue brand, Elmer now thrives in his new loving environment.
Upon Elmer’s arrival at the shelter, Mendes acknowledged the unprecedented challenge of de-gluing him. The team resorted to various methods, including dish soap, mineral oil, and bandage removal spray, before finding success with canola oil.
During the intensive treatment process, staff members dedicated hours to massaging Elmer with oil, bathing him, and ensuring his nourishment through syringe feeding. Despite his initial frailty, Elmer’s resilience shone through as he gradually regained strength.
Leah Owens, a compassionate volunteer, fostered Elmer initially but soon realized she couldn’t part with him. The kitten brought joy and companionship to Owens, filling a void in her life following her husband’s passing. Elmer’s infectious spirit and playful nature brightened Owens’ days, prompting her to make the decision to adopt him permanently.
Despite the unexpected fame Elmer brought into her life, Owens advocates for fostering animals and promoting adoption over purchasing pets. She highlights the importance of supporting shelters and rescues by providing temporary homes for animals in need.
As Elmer adapts to his new home, Owens describes him as resilient and playful, embodying the typical mischievous kitten behavior. His fearlessness and affectionate nature have endeared him to Owens, bringing laughter and warmth to their shared days.
