The mastermind behind the acclaimed animated movie “KPop Demon Hunters” has been honored with the key to Toronto, her hometown. Maggie Kang, a Korean-Canadian filmmaker, was surprised with the key by Mayor Olivia Chow during a panel discussion at Departure Festival celebrating the film’s success.
Mayor Chow praised Kang for her achievements and highlighted how her journey would serve as an inspiration for future generations. Kang, who did not address the audience after receiving the key, graciously posed for photos with Mayor Chow and Cindy Gouveia, the president of Sheridan College, her alma mater.
Since its premiere, “KPop Demon Hunters” has broken records on Netflix as the most-watched film ever on the platform. The movie’s success has led to a chart-topping soundtrack and the approval for a sequel. During the panel session, Kang hinted at her upcoming project, expressing her commitment to create a sequel with the same dedication and passion as the original.
Later at the Departure Honours gala, Kang is set to be honored with the cultural innovator award, recognizing her exceptional contributions to the industry.
