Moose Cree First Nation’s chief and council are gearing up to evacuate their most vulnerable residents from the island community in James Bay due to a potential flood threat. Chief Peter Wesley, in collaboration with local entities such as the services board, MoCreebec, Mushkegowuk Council, and the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority, is leading the emergency operations control group.
The decision to prepare for airlifting vulnerable citizens is a proactive measure in response to the provincial Ministry of Natural Resources’ alert regarding record snowfall in the region, particularly in areas that feed into the Moose River basin and watercourses leading to the community. With the imminent arrival of spring break-up and anticipated warmer temperatures, the risk of flooding is heightened.
Despite residing on an island, Chief Wesley emphasized that flooding is not a common occurrence in their community. However, recent experiences with high water levels and the impact on protective barriers have raised concerns. Individuals with health complexities, limited mobility, children, or those feeling unsafe during a potential flood are encouraged to volunteer for evacuation. Registration is mandatory for all community members in case a full evacuation becomes necessary.
While the total population of the community is 4,000, the exact number of initial evacuees and their temporary hosting locations are yet to be determined. Indigenous Services Canada has expressed readiness to support Moose Cree First Nation through the Emergency Management Assistance Program upon request.
In a similar context, residents from Kashechewan, another James Bay community, have been undergoing long-term relocation to southern regions due to issues with their water treatment plant. The community of Attawapiskat, further up the coast, is also taking preliminary steps to prepare for potential flooding as spring approaches.
The proactive measures undertaken by Moose Cree First Nation and the collaborative efforts with governmental agencies and partners reflect a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of community members in the face of environmental challenges.
