“Cristian Mungiu’s ‘Fjord’ Wins Palme d’Or at Cannes”

Must read

Cristian Mungiu’s latest film, “Fjord,” set in Norway and addressing political divisions, has secured the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. This marks Mungiu’s second win of the top award, following his previous success with “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.”

Amid a relatively subdued 79th Cannes Film Festival, “Fjord” stood out for its compelling narrative exploring what Mungiu described as “left-wing fundamentalism.” The film follows Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve portraying Romanian evangelicals who face a crisis when Norwegian child services intervene due to disciplinary actions involving their children.

Reflecting on the film’s themes, Mungiu highlighted the current societal polarization, emphasizing the importance of combating fundamentalism and promoting concepts such as trauma, inclusion, and empathy.

This victory places Mungiu among the select group of filmmakers who have won the Palme d’Or twice. His previous success with “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,” a poignant Romanian abortion story, dates back to 2007.

The recognition for “Fjord” contributes to an impressive winning streak for the film industry. Notably, the film’s distributor, Neon, has now claimed seven consecutive Palme d’Or recipients. “Fjord” joins this esteemed list, which features past winners like Jafar Panahi’s “It Was Just an Accident” and the 2024 champion, “Anora,” which later secured the best picture award at the Oscars.
