Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed his desire for stronger vocal opposition from his fellow premiers and Prime Minister Mark Carney in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent tariff threat. During a meeting of premiers in Charlottetown, Ford criticized Trump’s plan to impose 50 percent tariffs on numerous Canadian goods beginning next month. Ford emphasized the need for a unified “Team Canada” approach, urging the prime minister and other premiers to join him in defending Canada against the tariffs.
Ford emphasized the importance of collective action, stating that he cannot tackle the issue alone. He stressed the significance of unity in protecting Canada’s interests in the face of external threats. While Ford advocated for a strong stance against the tariffs, some premiers, such as New Brunswick’s Susan Holt and Alberta’s Danielle Smith, expressed reservations or outright opposition to cutting off energy exports to the U.S.
Ford underscored the need for exploring all possible strategies, stating that negotiations should be based on strength rather than weakness to garner respect from President Trump. He highlighted the potential impact on Ontario if the 50 percent tariffs are implemented. Despite his call for a united front, Ford denied any fraying in the Team Canada approach and emphasized the crucial role of Prime Minister Carney in leading the response to Trump’s tariff threats.
Carney is set to meet with the premiers to discuss the issue further, although Ford acknowledged that a comprehensive plan might not be ready by then. The dialogue between Carney and Trump has intensified following the tariff announcement, with both parties committing to ramping up negotiations in the upcoming weeks. The deadline for the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement extension passed recently, leading to ongoing discussions with hopes of reaching a renewed agreement before the end of the year, as the new tariffs are scheduled to take effect on August 19.
