“Alberta and BC Hit by Strong Winds, Power Outages”

Must read

Environment Canada issued warnings for parts of Alberta advising residents to secure loose objects due to strong winds causing power outages on Sunday. Wind speeds of 90-110 km/h were forecasted to decrease by Sunday evening, with all weather alerts lifted by Monday morning.

The agency cautioned that high winds could pose risks to high-sided vehicles and cause damage to structures such as roofs, fences, trees, and soft shelters in Alberta. Earlier in the day, warnings were in effect for southwestern Saskatchewan, along with special weather statements in southeastern British Columbia.

Fortis Alberta reported multiple power outages affecting 8,000 residents initially, which decreased to 2,000, attributed to a swift-moving winter storm causing downed power lines and infrastructure damage. Residents were urged to stay clear of downed power lines and damaged electrical equipment.

ATCO, another power company in Alberta, also reported power outages in northwestern areas. In British Columbia, BC Hydro stated that approximately 1,900 customers in the Southern Interior experienced power loss, which has since decreased to around 350 due to fallen trees and branches. Restoration efforts were underway to restore power by Sunday.

Southern Alberta was warned of damaging winds accompanied by snowfall, including regions like Calgary, Banff, Strathmore, Waterton Lakes, and Vulcan, where up to 20 centimeters of snow was expected before tapering off on Sunday night.
