Peel Police Officer Exonerated in Fatal Shooting

Must read

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) of the province has exonerated a Peel Regional Police officer in the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old man wielding a knife in a residence in Mississauga last year. According to SIU director Joseph Martino, there is no justification for pursuing criminal charges in this instance, and the case has been closed.

The report from the SIU, released on Wednesday, outlines the events that transpired on December 11, 2025, at a residence near Britannia Road and Winston Churchill Boulevard. It was reported that the 19-year-old summoned a family member to the basement of the house that afternoon, then proceeded to attack him with a knife, causing injury to his left shoulder. The injured individual sought help from a neighbor after fleeing outside and contacted the police.

Upon police arrival, they secured the area around the residence and were informed by another family member that the young man had been struggling with deteriorating mental health and had not been adhering to his medication regimen. The report also mentioned that the man had previously expressed thoughts of suicide.

Law enforcement officers entered the residence and found the individual barricaded in a basement bathroom. After several attempts to communicate with him, they forcibly entered the bathroom where they discovered the man lying in the shower with water running and blood present. Despite orders to show his hands, the man remained unresponsive.

Following a confrontation, during which the man wielded a knife and charged at an officer, a series of events unfolded leading to the officer shooting the individual. Despite efforts to provide medical assistance, the man was pronounced dead upon reaching the hospital.

Martino stated that the officer’s actions were justifiable as they were responding to an immediate lethal threat. However, he indicated that the final shots fired by the officer would require further examination due to uncertainties regarding the man’s movements and behavior after the initial shots.

The director also highlighted that the man continued to pose a threat even after being shot multiple times and still had possession of a knife.
