“Quebec Liberal Party Leadership Race Amidst Scandal”

Must read

The Quebec Liberal Party is set to begin its leadership race on January 12, 2026, following Pablo Rodriguez’s resignation after his six-month tenure. The new leader will be elected on March 14, 2026. Marc Tanguay, the MNA for LaFontaine, is currently acting as the interim leader of the Official Opposition at the National Assembly, taking over from Rodriguez last Thursday amidst the party’s internal turmoil.

Accusations of illegal campaign donations to secure Rodriguez’s leadership victory have surfaced, leading to an investigation by Quebec’s anti-corruption police, UPAC, into the alleged pay-for-vote scheme. While Rodriguez denies any knowledge of the arrangement, the party is facing scrutiny over the issue.

Prospective candidates interested in joining the leadership race have until February 13 to submit their applications and gather 750 signatures from eligible members. Additionally, a $30,000 deposit is required to participate, and candidates must adhere to an election spending cap of $120,000, excluding the deposit.
