Canada’s Rachel Homan has secured her first Olympic curling medal, a bronze, at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium. Homan, along with Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew, and Sarah Wilkes, defeated American Tabitha Peterson with a score of 10-7 on Saturday. Expressing her pride in the team’s determination, Homan highlighted their strong performance throughout the competition.
The game was closely contested initially, with Homan’s team seizing control by scoring three points in the sixth and eighth ends. Despite a one-point lead in the 10th end, the U.S. team could not force an extra end as Canada held firm.
This marks Canada’s return to the Olympic podium in women’s curling since Jennifer Jones clinched gold at the 2014 Sochi Games. Homan, who missed the playoffs in her previous Olympic appearances, including at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, redeemed herself with this bronze victory.
In another victory on the same day, the Canadian men’s curling team, led by Brad Jacobs, claimed gold by defeating Great Britain’s Bruce Mouat 9-6. However, Canada’s Brett Gallant and Jocelyn Peterman missed out on the mixed doubles playoffs earlier in the competition.
Homan’s team faced challenges in the round-robin matches but bounced back with five consecutive wins before succumbing to Sweden’s Anna Hasselborg in the semifinals. The intense competition witnessed precise shots from both the Canadian and American teams, with Homan’s crew ultimately emerging victorious.
The American skip, a three-time Olympian, experienced her first medal game in women’s curling since 2002. Meanwhile, the Swiss and Swedish teams are gearing up for the gold-medal match on Sunday.
