The rapper known as Mystikal, whose real name is Michael Lawrence Tyler, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping a woman at his Louisiana residence in 2022. Mystikal pleaded guilty to third-degree rape in March, resulting in a maximum sentence of 20 years, a reduction from the potential life sentence for first-degree rape. Just before his sentencing hearing, Mystikal attempted to retract his guilty plea, claiming he had not fully considered the consequences.
During the court proceedings, the victim urged the judge to impose the maximum sentence on Mystikal, recounting how he physically assaulted her before committing the sexual assault at his Prairieville home, located approximately 29 kilometers from Baton Rouge. Mystikal has been detained without bond at the Ascension Parish Jail since his arrest.
The Louisiana rapper gained national fame in the 1990s and is best known for his hit song “Shake Ya A**” released in 2000, which earned him a Grammy nomination in the best rap solo performance category. This is not Mystikal’s first brush with the law, as in 2003, he pleaded guilty to sexual battery and served a six-year prison term. That same year, he received Grammy nominations for his album “Tarantula” and the single “Bouncin’ Back (Bumpin’ Me Against The Wall).”
