In Gaza City, Mu’ayyad Ajjour and his neighbor Mohamed Zaida have been diligently searching for the remains of Ajjour’s five-year-old cousin, Masa, since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas commenced in October. The duo, equipped with basic tools, including a makeshift pulley system, have been scouring the rubble of a building where Masa and her family sought refuge. The structure had been severely damaged by an airstrike in March 2024.
Zaida, 17, ventured into a precarious tunnel he had excavated under the rubble, while Ajjour, 37, assisted from above, sifting through debris retrieved by Zaida. The painstaking search was a daily routine, with the men tirelessly combing through the remains of the collapsed building, hoping to find any trace of Masa.
The fragile ceasefire in Gaza has prompted families to undertake the grim task of locating and retrieving their loved ones’ remains buried beneath the rubble of destroyed buildings following years of conflict. Recently, searchers contacted Masa’s mother and grandfathers, informing them of a discovery matching Masa’s description—a skull, a torn pink sweater, and a ruby earring. This confirmation brought closure to the family, allowing them to properly lay Masa to rest.
The tragic events leading to Masa’s disappearance were recounted by Ajjour and Zaida, who mentioned that Masa, her parents, and her unborn sibling were caught in the onslaught. While Masa’s mother survived her injuries, her father’s whereabouts remain unknown. The relentless efforts of Ajjour and Zaida finally paid off when they uncovered the white shoe that possibly belonged to Masa, providing a glimmer of hope amidst the devastation.
The United Nations estimates that around 11,000 bodies are still interred beneath the rubble across Gaza, hampering waste removal operations. Despite the ongoing challenges, efforts are underway to clear debris and restore essential services in the region. The arduous process of rubble removal is expected to take years due to the vast amount of wreckage left behind by the conflict.
As Ajjour stood over Masa’s remains, he expressed a mix of relief and sorrow, emphasizing the importance of honoring Masa’s memory through a proper burial. His determination to find closure for Masa’s family fuels his resolve to continue searching for her missing father. The poignant search for Masa serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring impact of the conflict on innocent lives in Gaza.
