Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia launched numerous drones at Ukraine during nighttime assaults, defying a ceasefire declared by Kyiv that commenced at midnight. The Russian Defence Ministry alleged that Ukraine did not adhere to its ceasefire, claiming that 53 Ukrainian drones were shot down by air defenses over Russian territories, including the Crimean Peninsula and the Black Sea, between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.
According to Russia-installed Governor Sergei Aksyonov, a Ukrainian drone strike in Crimea’s city of Dzhankoi resulted in five fatalities. Aksyonov disclosed the casualties shortly after midnight, although he had posted about the attack more than 90 minutes earlier.
Despite Kyiv’s ceasefire initiative, there was no indication from Moscow that it would respect the ceasefire. Given that the conflict enters its fifth year following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, hopes for a cessation of hostilities are minimal. Diplomatic endeavors led by the U.S. to halt the war have yielded no progress.
A series of Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukraine on Tuesday claimed the lives of 27 individuals and left 120 civilians injured, according to Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. On Wednesday, two Russian drones struck a kindergarten in Sumy city in northeastern Ukraine, resulting in the death of a security guard and injuries to two others; fortunately, no children were present during the incident.
UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported on Wednesday that Russian attacks in recent days have resulted in the deaths of at least 70 civilians and injuries to over 500 individuals in 14 regions. The head of the mission, Danielle Bell, expressed concern over the significant civilian casualties and the widespread impact on the territory in a short span of time.
The conflict has led to the deaths of over 15,000 civilians, as per the United Nations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned Russia for persisting with shelling and aerial attacks despite Kyiv’s ceasefire declaration, emphasizing the need for Russia to end the ongoing war and engage in diplomatic efforts for a lasting peace.
Both Russia and Ukraine have continued long-range strike operations, with Moscow intercepting over 50 drones bound for the capital city within a 15-hour period. On the front line stretching approximately 1,250 kilometers, Russia faces a challenging battle against Ukraine’s drone-focused defenses.
Zelenskyy had declared a unilateral ceasefire following Russia’s announcement of a brief cessation of hostilities in observance of the 81st anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany. European officials welcomed Ukraine’s ceasefire gesture as a positive step toward a peaceful resolution.
Overnight, Russian forces launched 108 drones and three missiles, as confirmed by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, with attacks persisting into Wednesday morning. Sybiha criticized Moscow for disregarding calls to cease hostilities and highlighted Russia’s history of declaring short-term unilateral ceasefires during the conflict.
Sybiha denounced Russia’s insincere intentions for a separate ceasefire and urged increased international pressure on Moscow, including sanctions, diplomatic isolation, accountability for war crimes, and enhanced military and civilian support for Ukraine.
