A tipster who had an unusual encounter with a man near Brown University provided crucial information that helped police identify the suspect in the deaths of two students at the university and a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor. Referred to as “John” in a Providence police document, the tipster played a pivotal role in giving authorities the necessary details to solve the Brown shooting and the MIT professor’s killing.
Following a shooting incident at a Brown engineering building that left the community in Providence, R.I., anxious and frustrated, law enforcement struggled to identify the perpetrator. However, on the sixth day of the investigation, a breakthrough occurred, leading to the discovery of the suspected gunman deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The tipster, John, was instrumental in this development.
Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha praised the information provided by John, which led to locating the suspect approximately 24 hours later. John had multiple interactions with the suspect, Claudio Neves Valente, before the attack at Brown University. As images of a person of interest were circulated by the police, John identified Neves Valente and suggested investigating a grey Nissan potentially linked to him.
The police affidavit revealed that until receiving John’s tip, officials had not associated a vehicle with the possible shooter. This detail prompted the police to obtain additional video footage of a Nissan Sentra with Florida plates, enabling them to access a network of surveillance cameras around the city for further investigation.
John also provided crucial information about encountering Neves Valente in the engineering building and observing suspicious behavior near the location. Their interactions, described as a “game of cat and mouse,” culminated in a tense moment where John confronted the suspect about his actions.
Despite his significant contribution to the case, it remains uncertain if John will claim the $50,000 reward offered by the FBI for information related to the Brown shooting. FBI’s Boston field office acknowledged the possibility of John being eligible for the reward, indicating it would be reasonable for him to receive it.
The collaboration between the tipster, John, and law enforcement proved instrumental in solving the complex case that involved multiple violent incidents at Brown University and the tragic killing of an MIT professor.
