Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued an orange heat warning for southern Manitoba, with temperatures forecasted to reach the mid-to-high 30s and humidex values in the mid 40s over the next few days.
The oppressive heat poses a significant risk to those without shelter, according to Siloam Mission’s development director Margot Ross. She emphasized the life-threatening nature of the extreme temperatures, highlighting the vulnerability of community members forced to endure the heat outdoors.
Siloam Mission is actively providing support by offering cold drinks, meals, and a cool shelter for those in need. The organization serves around 1,600 meals daily and distributes hundreds of water bottles to address the escalating demand driven by the soaring temperatures.
In response to the heatwave, Siloam is appealing for donations of light summer clothing, sunscreen, and food items. The shelter has observed an increase in individuals seeking medical assistance for symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Meanwhile, volunteers like Carina Blumgrund and Mitch Bourbonniere are distributing water bottles to individuals outside Main Street Project, with a larger event planned through OPK later in the evening. Blumgrund stressed the critical importance of providing essential supplies to vulnerable individuals during extreme weather conditions, expressing concerns about the challenges faced by unhoused individuals experiencing both extreme heat and cold.
