Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held discussions with Prime Minister Mark Carney in Halifax before proceeding to the U.S. to meet with President Donald Trump to address the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Carney expressed optimism for a sustainable peace under Zelenskyy’s leadership and pledged an additional $2.5 billion in economic assistance for Ukraine. The aid package includes loan guarantees to international financial institutions and support for the International Monetary Fund.

Zelenskyy’s visit to Canada followed a prior phone conversation with Carney, leading to their official meeting on Saturday. Zelenskyy updated Carney on diplomatic efforts with the U.S. to resolve the conflict initiated by Russia’s invasion in February 2022. The Ukrainian leader is scheduled to present a 20-point peace plan to Trump at Mar-a-Lago in Florida on Sunday.

Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of enhancing Ukraine’s defense capabilities and advancing negotiations with the U.S. and other supportive nations. Carney praised Zelenskyy’s dedication to securing peace and reiterated Canada’s commitment to supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression.

During the upcoming talks, Zelenskyy and Trump will address security guarantees for Ukraine and discuss economic agreements. Additionally, territorial issues, including the status of the Donbas region, will be on the agenda. Zelenskyy proposed a demilitarized zone in eastern Ukraine, contingent on reciprocal actions by Russia and international monitoring.

Negotiations have progressed significantly, with Zelenskyy stating that a potential agreement between the U.S. and Ukraine is nearing completion, despite challenges related to territorial disputes. The Kremlin confirmed ongoing communication with U.S. representatives following recent discussions between Russian and American envoys in Florida.

Overall, the diplomatic engagements between Ukraine, the U.S., and other stakeholders aim to bring a comprehensive resolution to the conflict in Ukraine by addressing critical issues and fostering cooperation among nations.
